Defense rests; Black does not take the stand

The defense rested Tuesday in former Hollinger International CEO Conrad Black's fraud trial in federal court in Chicago. Black, who had indicated he would take the stand prior to the trial, declined to do so:

The move to keep Black out of the witness box also indicates his legal team has some confidence the prosecution's case might be too weak to convince the largely blue-collar jury that he looted $60 million from investors in his Hollinger International newspaper empire.

The three other defendants in the case - Hollinger former head bean counter Jack Boultbee and in-house lawyers Peter Atkinson and Mark Kipnis - also decided not to take the stand.

Closing arguments are scheduled for next week.

Black is accused of looting his former company, which at one time owned The Carthage Press and the Neosho Daily News.
