Two Jasper County inmates on death row

When an Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling June 4 put Missouri's death penalty back on the table, it again put two Jasper County inmates' lives on the line.

One of the two, Gary Black, who has been convicted twice of the 1998 murder of Missouri Southern student-athlete Jason Johnson, has been granted a reprieve, at least temporarily, when the Missouri Supreme Court granted him a third trial because of Jasper County Judge Jon Dermott did not allow Black to act his own lawyer.

The other death row inmate is Cecil Clayton, who was convicted of murdering a Barry County deputy in 1996. His case was heard in Jasper County on a change of venue.
