McDonald County Circuit Court Judge John LePage's sentencing decision in the case of former Neosho Police officer Justin Pickup has been roundly criticized, but it is even worse than it initially seemed.
As media outlets have noted, Pickup was sentenced to 15 days "shock time" in jail for supplying alcohol to 16-year-old Kassie Schenck shortly before she died in a car accident. The Missouri attorney general's office, which prosecuted the case had recommended the maximum one-year.
The same media outlets noted that Pickup was placed on probation for two years. What was not specified however, was that Pickup was placed on unsupervised probation. A police officer, a man who should be held to a higher standard when it comes to breaking the law, gave alcohol to an underage girl, she dies, and the judge thinks that is worth 15 days and unsupervised probation?
This is an insult to the Schenck family, and to the hard-working law enforcement officers who stay on the right side of the law and have been tarred with the same brush as Pickup.
