(From Fourth District Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler)
“Today’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling on Arizona’s illegal immigration law is a clear indication that the federal government must act to enforce America’s immigration law. While the Court let stand a provision allowing police to verify the immigration status of those detained, it struck down three common sense provisions, determining they had infringed on the federal government’s exclusive authority over immigration matters. The State of Arizona’s law was passed as a result of the failure of the federal government to enforce existing immigration laws. This decision should serve as a wake-up call to all Americans who believe in respect for and adherence to the law that the federal government is not performing its constitutional obligation to protect this nation’s borders and must put politics aside to enforce our laws.”
