Source: Child sex criminal's job was monitoring Joplin students' laptops

When Ronny Justin Myers, an employee in the Joplin R-8 School District's technology department, was arrested February 15 while on his way to have sex with an underage girl at Northpark Mall, these were the statements issued by Superintendent C. J. Huff:

From the Joplin Globe:

Superintendent C.J. Huff said district officials were notified of Myers’ arrest just before noon Friday.

"We are disappointed that this has happened and are in shock and we're going to cooperate fully with the police department and keep families informed as this unfolds," he said. "We take it very seriously and will respond appropriately."

The school district sent out an automated message to parents informing them of the arrest about 4 p.m. Friday.

From Four States Home Page (KODE/KSNF)

Superintendent Doctor C.J. Huff says they will not take this incident lightly. "In this case, we're taking this very seriously, like we always do, and we'll proceed accordingly."

Statement released to school employees and placed on district website:

At 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, we were contacted by the Joplin Police Department with some disturbing news. Ronny Justin Myers, an employee in our technology department at the Administration Building, was arrested on a federal warrant that stemmed from an investigation by the Southwest Missouri Cyber Crime Task Force. The warrant was for furnishing obscene material to a minor less than 16. The minor was not a student of Joplin schools and the arrest was made off school property. The individual remains in federal custody. The investigation is ongoing and Joplin Schools is cooperating fully with law enforcement. Thank you for your patience and support.

Not until Tuesday did parents discover that Myers had admitted to having pornographic photos of 10 Joplin students on his laptop. That information was taken from a sentencing memorandum filed in U. S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri.

That information not only has stunned locals, but it becomes an even bigger concern when coupled with the information that a source close to administration has confirmed to the Turner Report that Myers' chief responsibility was monitoring student use of the laptops that each Joplin High School student is provided by the school district.

The source said that Myers was able to see what was on the screen of any of the high school laptops, whether they were on school property or if the student was at home. That would also include any photos that were taken on the computers' built-in cameras.

The district also has the ability to monitor what teachers have on the screens of their computers.

High school teachers who have talked to the Turner Report this evening said administration has never said one word to them about Myers and his admission of having pornographic photos of students.

Myers also admitted to having a video of a 17-year-old having sex, but there is no mention in the memorandum about whether that person was a Joplin student.

OH, they were vigilant alright. Vigilantly spying.

Throw the damn things away and get some books. What a bunch of creepers.

That means the 8th graders are now subject to the same kind of perversion, doesn't it? Good job, Joplin. Freaks like Myers who like younger kids can watch your middle school kids, and if Angie, CJ, and Klilsta have their way, all the kids will have this technology at home. I know people worried about this kind of thing when those computers were purchased, and now it's happening. Invading our homes, hurting our kids, and not even for the benefit of "learning," but to make CJ and Angie more famous. They should become famous for trials about this, not for education.

Do the student's lap tops have cameras on them? I watched a whole show about how they can easily be remotely activated. Imagine how easy it would be for the person hired to monitor them.

What I find interesting is Dr huffs statement: 'like we always do..' um, always? Using the word always makes it sound like this has happened before. Has it Dr huff?

"The district also has the ability to monitor what teachers have on the screens of their computers, whether the teachers are at school or are at home."

This would only be true if it was also a district asset installed with monitoring software and then they chose to use said asset while at home. This whole article kind of makes the author sound like an eTard.

CAUTION: Inappropriate pictures or videos on your laptop will result in more than just school disciplinary procedures. BY LAW any nude, partially nude, or pornographic poses found on school-issued laptops are required to be confiscated by local authorities. Worse case scenarios can result in charges filed against students.
● The laptop issued to you is district property and all content (software, email, Internet usage) will be monitored AT ALL TIMES. Content found that is related to illegal or unethical activities will be reported to the authorities.

It is no secret that a school issued laptop/iPad will be monitored. Instead of blaming the admin for students taking inappropriate pics lets educate our kids and as parents it is CRUCIAL that we monitor everything our kids are doing online.

Jeremy - If you read the article, it never says the district can monitor the teachers computer use at home, you combined two sentences when you made your quote. I'm sure if a teacher had a school lap top they were using at home that could be monitored the same as the student lap tops at home.

Do a search like Lower Merion School District peeping and you'll see this is SOP, including the total failure of accountability. Covering the camera's aperture with a bit of tape is strongly advised.

I think the point is do the kids understand that they might be doing homework in their night clothes even and possibly be providing entertainment for someone? Those cameras can be turned on remotely to help detect thieves. A pedophile at the helm can abuse that ability. Do the kids understand that? Did the district make that clear to parents when this man was arrested? The answer is no. No one is arguing that the district has the right to monitor computer use, but peeping is another topic. Did the man just download what kids had in their computers, or did he watch? The district has not clarified the risk to the students. It was a lie to say they were not endangered. Did he share their pictures? Who knows? Certainly not the patrons of this district.

I researched the Lower Merion School District. It's very worrisome. How do we know that our kids won't be peeped? And now that we know R8 had a pedophile in charge of computer safety, how do we know our kids weren't watched? The district did not address this possibility, but apparently with ten girls on his computer, they probably should have.

Who in the administration can spell tort? How about deposition? Can anyone in the administration define what a litigation hold is?

What would the answer be if Huff was asked on the record if there is a litigation hold on anything concerning the computers?
