Representatives from the state auditor's office were scheduled to arrive today in Joplin. Tonight, the Joplin R-8 Board of Education discusses a budget proposal that calls for teachers and other employees to receive raises that amount to $1 to $3 a week, only a few weeks after the board approved hiring a financial adviser to arrange long term debt to pay off $8 million in "might as well" purchases that mainly involved sports frills.
So naturally, KODE, having an opportunity for an eight minute, live interview with Superintendent C. J. Huff would explore these issues.
No, it is a C. J. Huff puff piece, featuring details on what the new high school is going to be like.
Plenty of gushing takes place.

The local media, including the Globe, need to be relabled as "infotainment" rather than as "news." They have sadly deprived the constituents of this area of any real informaton of importance. I noted that today's Globe has a sidebar about how the new high school is being financed, including "donations that were earmarked for specific purposes." It is true there were many donations provided to different groups in the school, but they were not necessarily for rebuilding the structure, but for programs that have yet to receive their donations.
It looks like a sad attempt to frontload for the auditor, as in "look at all these wonderful things we did," without also stating what a deplorable mess the district has become. But that's okay. The auditor's office is smarter than to fall for that, and they have already been alerted to watch for those things.
Nice try, but it won't help. The truth will out.
