Layoffs of employees at Mercy Hospitals in Joplin, Carthage, and Springfield was supposed to begin today. Reportedly, 14 jobs were cut in Carthage and 11 in Joplin. This is the news release that was issued by the Mercy system.
Like all health care providers, Mercy is managing the impact of market changes, including reimbursement reductions from government and commercial payers, lack of Medicaid expansion in most of the states we serve and declining inpatient utilization. We have been expecting and preparing for these changes for several years and have made tremendous progress in redesigning the health delivery system to meet evolving needs.

As part of our transformation, we have consolidated many non-patient care support services to streamline how we work and achieve greater efficiencies.
We are in the process of further reorganizing our support services across all Mercy communities and anticipate reductions in that workforce ranging from 200 to 300 positions later this month. Departments affected are in support functions; direct patient care areas are not affected. Mercy is committed to maintaining the highest levels of quality, safety and service as we undertake these changes. We recognize the impact of these workforce reductions on our co-workers and our transition plan will reflect our commitment to dignity and compassion. Mercy's total workforce is approximately 40,000 across seven states.

Mercy is awful, at least those high up. They care very little about their employees and less about the patients. Continual reduction of force while leaving the ER in a mess. Patients are waiting 6+ hours to get in. That is absolutely ridiculous. How in the hell are they supposed to run their Taj Mahal hospital when they can't even run their tiny hospital now? You can't do it by constantly cutting staff.
Just a future look at them impact of Obomacare.
