My Joplin Tornado books will be among those available during a book signing today from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Always Buying Books, 5357 N. Main, Joplin (out by the old Trade X building).
5:41: Stories from the Joplin Tornado, written with Carthage Press Managing Editor John Hacker features our essays and coverage of the tornado, as well as stories written by survivors, and complete obituaries of those who died on May 22, 2011.
Spirit of Hope: The Year After the Tornado, also written with John Hacker, features more tornado stories, but also covers the recovery of Joplin from the day of the tornado through the one-year anniversary, including coverage of major anniversaries, the memorial service the week after the tornado, the Joplin High School graduation, and the Extreme Makeover visit, along with much, much more.
Scars from the Tornado: One Year at Joplin East Middle School features first person accounts from East Middle School students of their tornado experiences, as well as their experiences attending school in a warehouse after their building was destroyed in the tornado. The book also features my account of teaching in that building and some of the highlights of a most unusual year.
For those who are interested in the history of the Joplin Tornado, the three books provide what up to now has been the most complete recording of what happened that day and the affect it had on the community.
My other books which will be available today are Let Teachers Teach, No Child Left Alive, Small Town News, Newspaper Days, and The Turner Report.
Four other authors will also be on hand from 1 to 4 p.m.- Larry Wood, author of Wicked Joplin and Ozarks Gunfights and Other Notorious Incidents, Cheryle Finley, author of The Best o Cheryle Cookbook, Helen Hunter, author of Echoes of School Bells, and Michele Newton Hansford, author of Images of America, Carthage, Missouri.
This is also the final day of Always Buying Books owner Bob Wolfe's three-day Wordstock book sale, in which he is offering a buy one, get one of equal price free special.
Hope to see you there.
