Joplin R-8 Board member Shawn McGrew out at Freeman

The newest member of the Joplin R-8 Board of Education, Shawn McGrew, is out at Freeman Hospital.

The departure, which reportedly was not voluntary, came less than two weeks after McGrew was the face of Freeman Health on local television shows promoting the Joplin Christmas Parade, which Freeman is sponsoring for the first time this year.

McGrew's former position, Director of Service Excellence is being advertised on the Freeman website.

McGrew was named to the board September 10 after Dawn Sticklen, a board member since 2012, resigned after enrolling her daughter at Webb City High School. Four candidates applied for the post, including two, McGrew and Jeff Koch, who had run for school board in April, as well as former Joplin Police Chief Lane Roberts and Jennifer Martucci.

The board eliminated Roberts and Martucci because they had not run in April and then chose McGrew, who finished several hundred votes behind Koch. The selection was made by a 4-2 margin with Anne Sharp, Randy Steele, Mike Landis, and Lynda Banwart voting for McGrew and Debbie Fort and Jim Kimbrough voting against him.

McGrew also serves on the Joplin Bright Futures Board.

Description:
The director of Service Excellence is responsible for the operational, financial, and personnel activities in the Service Excellence division of Freeman Health System. They ensure the overall implementation of initiatives and programs associated with Service Excellence throughout the organization.

This dynamic and high energy professional will ensure quality of service by providing direct oversight for HCHAPS data and contract with the third party vendor conducting patient surveys. Additionally the director will provide education and support for HCAHPS education and effective utilization of tools related to patient satisfaction. They will provide detailed data regarding patient satisfaction trends to leadership in the health system,work with high-performance employee teams, leaders, and departments to enhance patient satisfaction and identify opportunities to improve HCAHPS scores in all applicable areas.

As a representative of Freeman the director will participate in activities/events both internally and externally supporting to overall mission and vision of the health system. They will serve as a liaison between the health system and the community and take part in professional development opportunities outside of Freeman.

Jeff Koch on the school board? Of course not. Screw the voters! Again! The fab four will INSTALL someone ridiculous like Tina Smith, Mike Johnson, Jeff Flowers, or maybe Annie's poodle.

I should mention that Shawn McGrew is out at Freeman, but he is still on the school board.

Lovely. Mike Landis nominated this snake in the grass and Suzanne Sharp fought for him. It's harder and harder to believe that they aren't as corrupt as the man they protect. As I recall, when McGrew applied Turner provided ample documentation proving that McGrew had not paid his taxes (the taxes that support the schools) and that he had not paid his child support, but Suzanne and Mikey made sure that the deadbeat dad represented the district. That he serves on the Bright Futures board is ironic, at the least, as he oversees the providing of needs for kids who have dads just like he is--absent and selfish.

Please remove him from office and put Koch in, which is what we patrons wanted to begin with. It's time for the older members of the board to be held accountable for their decisions. Only Kimbrough and Fort, at this moment, can be relied upon to use common sense. The rest need turned out with McGrew.

Bet he won't be paying child support or taxes now! Wonder what would happen if we drug screened Huff, Landis and the rest of the crew?

What do you say BOE? You drug screen our kids, set an example. One catch, we draw the blood and an outside source tests it, no self eval this time! We don't trust you!

He would not be on that board if everyone knew what he was fired for. Freeman is non profit so they had to ensure there was enough proof to back up their decision.

I worked with McGrew for years at Freeman. He is a genius at manipulating people and he will con his way into another high paying position.

It used to be that a B.A. or a B.S. was a basic requirement for a professional position.

Now a BS artist with a BA (Bad Attitude) can wrangle any position.

Huff is probably encouraging him to apply for the position vacated by Kim Vann. Or perhaps they will create a special position for him. They are very creative in adding new positions for their favorite people.

Technically parts of Freeman are non profit and some parts are not.

Is it true that he failed a drug test? If so, what is the School Board policy on that? Would they allow a person who has failed a drug test to remain on the Board?

The employer drug test, if there was one, would be confidential. So unless the school board wants to test him randomly the issue is a non issue.

do any of you know shawn personally? probably not. he isnt a bad man ive known him going on 5 years. he is not the man turner says he is shawn is a wonderful man

Well Hazel I too have known Shawn a few years and on the surface he is a great guy. But underneath there is a man who does not see the need in paying for his child, paying his taxes or being faithful to his wife. Randy may be bitter but this Shawn person is a dead bead dad jerk.

I can say, with absolute certainty, that his employment was not terminated due to a drug test. Remember, these are people that you're speculatively defaming. Open criticism is to be expected relative to a medium such as this, but going so far as to make baseless allegations is tactless.

Hmm...well, if you know so much, why was his employment terminated? Perhaps it was for the same reason his employment was terminated in Columbia years ago? Or maybe you don't know him as well as you think...

To Hazel Clark, kudos to you for posting publicly.

To Mr. Turner, I've visited your blog off and on throughout the years and have found it to be both informative and entertaining. I also sided with you upon employment termination with the Joplin school system and thought the whole ordeal was rather shady on their part.

To the Joplin School Board, and the city council for that matter, I believe things in Joplin have been shady for years now. Joplin went through some very difficult times but money corrupts and that is what I believe we are seeing. Its sad.

That said, we all have skeletons in our closet. To all of the anonymous people posting here, I would imagine at least half of you have something you aren't proud of and would like to keep private. Shawn too may have his own skeletons. However, I have known him for many years and I have seen him do some amazing and selfless things for both individuals and the community as a whole. These blog postings, and comments, trample the man as if he were some sort of leper. We all make mistakes. We cannot change the past, we can only strive to for a better future. He has a good heart and it frustrates me to see so many people cutting him down who know nothing about him.

On a personal note, I think Freeman has made a mistake here. Having worked at Freeman for a very long time, I can say that it is not without its own politics and I suspect politics played a big role in his termination. Shawn helped to make Freeman a better place. He fought for all of you when ER turnaround times were 24+ hours for the year following the tornado when Joplin had but one hospital. He also did great things for and in the name of the Joplin tornado victims. Believe me, it was definitely an uphill battle where administration didn't always see eye-to-eye.

You see, they (Freeman) lost some of their soul after putting Paula and company in place. Speak up about the regime and you might find yourself looking for a new job too.
