Carthage Press no longer a daily newspaper

The Joplin Globe is the only daily newspaper left in Jasper County.

GateHouse Media, the company that owns my old newspaper, the Carthage Press, announced today (though word had circulated through parts of the community a few weeks ago) that this Sunday's paper will be the last daily edition of the newspaper.

From now on, it will be published twice a week on Wednesday and Saturday.

It was only a couple of years ago that GateHouse trimmed the Press publication days from six to five, eliminating the Monday edition.

The following message was posted this morning on the Carthage Press Facebook page:

Today's Carthage Press has an important announcement to our readers!

Starting next week, The Carthage Press will be changing its printing schedule. The Carthage Press will be moving to a twice weekly paper and will be publishing on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Sunday, June 7 will be the last edition where we print five days per week. The next paper will be published on June 10.

Starting Wednesday, June 10, you will see a new design and bigger average paper. We hope you enjoy the new format.

The new subscription rate will be $79 per year for a yearly subscription and those that have subscribed will be getting a new run rate which will more than likely extend your subscription.
If you have any questions, feel free to call us at 358-2191.

We thank you for your continued support.

Why is everyone so surprised?

Newspapers are a dying breed. The only people are actually go out and buy a subscription or from the machines are over the age of 55.

Better question, how long until the Globe starts cutting days? I'm willing to place a bet to any takers, within the next five years.

I am grieved by the need for me to fund the Globe because I like a daily local newspaper. Does it seem that the Globe just basically prints the minutes from the last Chamber of Commerce meeting, along with unedited press releases? The last good reporting was after the tornado when the Kansas City Star was writing most of the copy. It's my Daily Disappointment. I still miss Edgar.

Carol needs to go save the Press.

I believe Edgar and Dan put the death of the Globe in place.
