Joplin city manager provides weekly update

(City Manager Sam Anselm provided the following update to Joplin City Council members Friday afternoon.)

Good afternoon, everyone. Please see below for this week’s update. This week was fairly light on meetings outside of meetings with department heads.

Key Meetings

-On Wednesday, I attended the board meeting of the Joplin Regional Partnership.

-On Friday, I attended the monthly meeting of the Woman’s Club of Joplin, to give an update on events/projects going on in and around the city. We discussed topics like the 20th Street overpass, CDBG-DR projects, library, etc.

Miscellaneous

-If you have not had a chance to visit Mercy Park since it’s opening last Saturday, or since Wednesday when the new mural was dedicated, I would encourage you to do so. We’ve received very positive feedback on the park and mural.

-Departments continue to work on their non-personnel cost allocation sheets as part of the Priority-Based Budgeting process.

In the Pipeline

-Please mark your calendar for the next budget work session, scheduled for September 12, 2016, where we will go over the line item budget. Pursuant to your directive given at our meeting on August 29th, I will also have my recommendation on further reductions in spending to meet the stated objective of presenting a balanced budget that also accommodates a 3% raise for employees.

-Staff is also preparing for our Issues & Options work session, which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, September 20th. You will hear the request from the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce, the museum, the general employee committee, and we will be reviewing the parks portion of the parks & stormwater sales tax.

-The city auction will take place on October 8, 2016. You can expect a list of items to be declared surplus at your meeting on Tuesday night.
