It came too late for Kay Hively and Larry James, two members of the Newtonia Battlefield Association who fought for years to bring the site of two Civil War battles under the federal umbrella, but 25 acres of land on which the battles were fought and the Ritchey Mansion have been added to the property under the guidance of the Wilson Creek Battlefield National Historic Site.
A bill, which was sponsored by Sen. Roy Blunt, was passed as part of the omnibus bill and was signed by President Biden.
