Carthage High School mourns loss of sophomore killed in crash on W. Fairview Avenue

A Carthage High School sophomore was killed in a one-vehicle accident 11:41 p.m. Thursday on W. Fairview Avenue two miles west of Carthage.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado driven by an 18-year-old Carthage woman traveled off the left side of the roadway and struck a fence and a tree.

The driver was taken to Mercy Carthage with serious injuries.

The Highway Patrol report only says that a passenger was pronounced dead at the scene by Jasper County Coroner James Harrison and that the passenger was a juvenile.

A post on the Carthage R-9 School District's Facebook page identified the victim as Brianna Morris.

Carthage School District is saddened to share the news that CHS Sophomore, Brianna Morris, tragically lost her life in a car accident last night(8/7/25).

Although the school year has not yet begun, our community is still mourning the loss of another student just a month ago. Facing another tragedy so soon will be difficult for many students and staff.

As we begin to process this heartbreaking loss, CHS and CTC are working to implement the district’s crisis response plan. Counselors will be available for students and staff in the CHS Media Center on Monday, August 11, from 1:00 - 2:00 pm, with additional support available throughout the week as needed.

Please keep Brianna’s family, close friends, and teachers in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

The fatality was the 74th this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.
