MNEA president: Zero hour on HB 253

Missouri NEA is mobilizing its troops for one last effort to prevent an override of Gov. Jay Nixon's veto of HB 253. The legislature's veto session will start Wednesday. MNEA President Charles Smith sent the following message to members this morning:

In 24 hours the Missouri Legislature will attempt to override Governor Nixon's veto of House Bill 253.
It's time to take action! Call your state legislator toll free at 1.888.907.9711 and tell him or her to vote NO on House Bill 253 orclick here to send an email
HB 253 is a giveaway to large corporations, lobbyists and special interests, with an $800 million PER YEAR price tag paid by cuts to our public schools. In fact, if HB 253 became law cuts to public school budgets would be the equivalent of eliminating between 5,438 and 9,411 teachers and support staff.
Members of the Missouri National Education Association are on the front lines of this fight. You have made thousands of phones calls, sent emails, met with legislators, produced television and radio commercials all to urge legislators to vote NO on HB 253.
Your efforts are working! We have the momentum. Now is the time for action. Call your state legislator toll free at 1.888.907.9711 and urge him/her to vote NO on HB 253.
Who is behind HB 253? Anti-public education billionaire Rex Sinquefield has already spent $2.5 million to pass HB 253's special interest giveaways.
If HB 253 becomes law, EVERY school district will face drastic cuts in state aid:
  • School budgets will be cut.
  • Educators laid off.
  • Class sizes will balloon.
As a fellow educator I know you care about Missouri's public schools--please take a moment and call your lawmaker. Urge him or her to vote NO on HB 253.
