Documents: Ex-wife says Joplin R-8 board member was five years in arrears on child support

Documents filed earlier this year in Jasper County Circuit Court contain allegations that newly-appointed Joplin R-8 Board of Education member Shawn McGrew was more than five years in arrears on child support payments and was as much as four months behind in paying for his daughter's tutoring.

McGrew was also behind on paying for his daughter's medical expenses, according to claims in the court documents.

The allegations are included in a motion to modify and a motion for contempt filed by McGrew's former wife, Emily Rachel McGrew, in May.

McGrew's former wife also alleges that McGrew claimed their daughter as a dependent on his state and federal income tax returns at a time when he was in arrears on child support..

Respondent (McGrew) is in contempt of the court's amended judgment of modification extended on February 5, 2013 by claiming the child on his 2012 state and federal income taxes, despite his being in arrears on child support payments since 2008

On August 30, 2012, the respondent, under oath, asserted to the court he was current in all child support payments. The respondent, according to the Division of Child Support Enforcement, had been in arrears with child support payments since September 2008, only becoming current in April 2013.

The respondent was court ordered to pay for alternative expenses in the previous parenting plan, adopted in 2008, however failed to do so, resulting in an arrearage ranging between $7,798.72 to $13,248.72, depending upon child care credit.

McGrew's former wife also claimed McGrew was in contempt of court for not paying tutoring fees for his daughter. McGrew's payments were sporadic, according to the documents, with him falling as much as four months behind:

On February 4, 2014, the respondent, through e-mail, asked that the petitioner cease following the parenting plan, requesting that invoices not be sent to him, only the total amount due. The respondent claimed to be confused by the invoices being sent.

A request for the respondent to pay the past due amount was sent via e-mail on March 21, 2014. The respondent replied by stating, "Those amounts were not included on the invoice that was recently sent and I have requested you just send amounts due in a normal format. If I don't know amounts, I can't pay them."

The motion claimed that McGrew's former wife had sent him an invoice every month for over a year "and (he) was also provided with a statement of past due amounts on several occasions. The respondent should be aware of the amounts due, as well as the amounts paid."

At the time of the filing, May 22, 2014, no payments for the tutoring had been received during the calendar year, according to the motion.

It asked that McGrew "pay past due amounts immediately and four months of tutoring expenses, $280, to make sure that he does not fall behind in his payments

McGrew's former wife also alleges that McGrew has fallen months behind in payments for his daughter's medical expenses:

Notification of the delinquencies and total amounts due was again sent to the respondent on February 3, 2014 via e-mail. A payment has not been received since November 17, 2013.

She asked for past due amounts, plus $200 "in the event of future arrearage."

In his response to Emily McGrew's motion to modiy, filed August 22 in Jasper County Circuit Court, McGrew did not address the allegations, but claimed that Emily McGrew was continuing "to alienate the child" from him.and said that her relationship with their daughter was not "a parent-child relationship," but has "made the child an equal."

I bet this won't be reported anywhere else.
Any minute now a Huff supporter will spout off about this being a personal matter.

A deadbeat dad who cheats on his taxes. Yes, birds of a feather do flock together. Easy to see why the Christian, Koch, and the law enforcement officer, Roberts, didn't appeal to CJ and his gang of merry robbers. McGrew had to be their man. Just slimy enough.

1. Doesn't pay his local taxes that support the schools. Paycheck had to be garnished.
2. Doesn't pay his child support. That's a great quality in a board member.
3. Cheats on his federal income tax.

And this is just what we know at the moment. He should be immediately recalled, as well as Sharp, Landis, Steele, and Banwart. The state would be far preferable to this crooked bunch.

Huh. Go figure. Anne Sharp fights for a deadbeat freeloader. I bet her family is really proud about now. I bet Freeman Hospital is, too. Is this all Joplin has to offer? Explains a lot.

How embarrassing. Can't they do anything right? When they had so many other fine candidates? I guess moral people do aggravate them, asking questions and all that. Bothersome folk. So much better to have one of their own kind.

Kind of makes you wonder what a vice-president at Freeman Hospital must spend all his money on if he can't afford to pay his taxes or his child support. You know he makes more money than common people like, say, teachers. He must have some expensive habits.

Good job, Freeman Hospital! Your VP is a dandy example of an employee.

Isnt this tool on the Bright Futures board? They're all about getting necessities to poor kids. Like the ones who have deadbeat dads. This is hypocrisy at its worst, I'd say. And it exposes again the kind of people CJ surrounds himself with and the kind of people in charge of Bright Futures.

Gee, Nancy Good, did you know this scumbag was this low when you managed his campaign? And wasn't he supported by that mega PAC? Crooks. Every one of them.

Mr. Turner, you have finally crossed th eline. Not really, I just wanted to be the first to say it. If this is crossing the line, then please keep doing it because Joplin needs someone who is willing to cross the line and fight for those who do not have anyone to fight for them. I consider this news about Shawn McGrew to be a positive thing. It should give Anne Sharp a better idea of what Shawn McGrew's passions are.

Lay off Shawn. He's in Bright Futures and he's a lunch buddy, for goodness sake. When a man has that much going on, he's bound to miss paying his bills for a few years.

Another mistake by the board. If they had picked Lane Roberts, he could have investigated Shawn McGrew. No, wait, if they had picked Lane Roberts, or Jeff Koch, or Jenifer Martucci, they wouldn't have needed to investigate McGrew.

I was planning to vote for McGrew in April when I read that he had not bothered to pay his taxes. I heard other people say the same thing. That is why he finished next to last.

Didn't McGrew used to work for Turner at the Carthage Press? I haven't lived in Carthage for a while, but I vaguely remember that. I have to give you credit, Turner. You don't play favorites. You'll toss anybody under the bus.

Landis doesn't have his kid in the same public school that he's going around promoting and has emptied the public's pockets for. Landis has allegedly put in bids for landscaping at the new schools. McGrew doesn't pay his taxes or take care of his daughter. Huff gets paid twice every day he's off making his speeches that the board conveniently doesn't know about. And then he doesn't appear to pay his taxes, at least on those speeches.

How do we get them out of town? Sleaze bags.

To Anonymous 5:17- Shawn McGrew covered sports for me for me at the Press when he was attending Carthage High School.

5:17--

How is telling the truth about someone who has put himself up as a public official, using public documents, throwing someone under the bus? McGrew chose to not pay his debt. It's hardly a smear. Just doing what the local paper and tv stations should be doing--looking after the public interest. Thank you, Mr. Turner, for what you do for us.

If I was the mother of his child, I wouldn't let him anywhere near her. Uh uh no way. Hard to say what she could get into around that place.

It is the HUFF AND PUFF SHOW....

Oh yea ain't he a slum lord as well?

5:04,
He spends quite a bit on booze.

Gee whiz, I bet Anson is really proud of his pick for the Board tonight, right Anson? Stiffs the public and his own kid. Who doesn't like a guy like that? Maybe Anson needs to investigate CJ's picks a little more before he gives his verbose endorsements.

Isn't there a morals clause about board members? Who's job is it to enforce it? Does the board have to remove him?

So my question is - how did McGrew ever catch up on his payments? I mean 7 thousand is a lot of money. What would prevent someone from say, embezzling a little money here and there from your job or Bright Futures?

Public records are a funny thing- they are public. And it's only a matter of time before someone like Randy Turner discovers they exist.

I don't think there is any amount of spin doctoring that the BOE can do at this point- they made the decision- now they have to endure the humiliation and public outcry as a result.

Anonymous said...

He will fit right in with the majority of the BOE.

Stand up reporting. Everything posted in the first few paragraphs are ALLEGATIONS from an ex spouse. Speaking as a divorced husband, I can assure you there will be discrepancies here. People are so quick to play judge and jury they dont even know all the facts. Put up the pitch forks and torches and let the courts settle the disputes and get all the facts. Turner, this is an one sided-attack article and frankly poor form.

Anonymous said...

Why don't people get their stories straight before slandering someone? You can choose to believe a one sided story from something you only can read on the internet, but last I checked, not everything on the internet is true.

Unable to read 8:36? The first sentence clearly states these are allegations filed with the court.

The Division of Child Support document is not an allegation, nor is the IRS tax lien. Those are facts.

I have to agree with 8:32. The tax lien is irrefutable, which definitely builds a case for the child support situation. Perhaps he should have waited to jump back into harness with a new wife if he couldn't provide for his child. The tax situation alone should've steered the Board toward any of the other more honest and responsible candidates. But, this is the type of person that CJ and members Sharp, Steele, and Landis must have in order to continue their operations. An honest person, such as Fort and Kimbrough, would just create more problems and ask more of those pesky questions. They, and Banwart, if she can't get her head together, need to go immediately. We can elect five as easily as two.
