Champion has $70,000 advantage in Senate race



Incumbent State Senator Norma Champion, R-Springfield, has a $70,000 plus advantage over her challenger, Springfield Democrat Doug Harpool, but Harpool did a lot to close the gap during the past three months.
Documents filed today with the Missouri Ethics Commission indicated Harpool raised $43,414.50 during the last quarter, compared to $6,893.22 for Ms. Champion. Harpool spent $4,306.11, leaving him with $39,108.39, according to the disclosure reports, while Ms. Champion spent $6,956.57, leaving her with $113,689.79.
Champion contributions
Ms. Champion received maximum $650 contributions from Anheuser-Busch, St. Louis; Freeman Physicians Group PAC, Joplin, Silver Dollar City PAC, Branson; and the Elect Nodler Committee, Carthage. She received one out-of-state contribution, $500 from 3M, St. Paul, Minn.
Harpool contributions
Harpool's contributions were dominated by lawyers and unions, traditional Democratic bases of support.

Champion expenses
Out of the $6,956.57 spent by Ms. Champion, $6,000 went to Election Day Enterprises, the consulting firm run by lobbyist Jewell Patek, who has a wide ranging list of clients.
Harpool expenditures
Harpool spent $4,030.73 on envelopes, campaign materials, office supplies, lapel stickers, and stationery, according to the disclosure forms.
