The surgery, to be performed by Dr. Joel Matta in Santa Monica, will be done in hopes of preventing Smith from needing hip replacement surgery. Regardless of the outcome, it is highly unlikely Smith, the Broncos' all-time leading receiver, will play football again. He had surgery on the hip in February and was only able to practice on a limited basis in November before being shelved for the season. Before the Broncos' final game, Smith acknowledged that his career likely is over.
Smith researched facilities in Boston and Birmingham, Ala., before deciding to let Matta perform the surgery.

Tuesday surgery scheduled for Rod Smith
Denver Broncos wide receiver and one time Missouri Southern State University standout Rod Smith will undergo hip surgery Tuesday, according to the Denver Post:
