The parking fees are not a new concept for the R-8 School District. Students were assessed fees at the old high school, but the fees that have been set this year are at least twice as much as those fees and no student who is currently at Joplin High School has ever had to pay a parking fee.
The fees and changes to the dress code have fueled a firestorm on social media over the last few days, with most of the students who are commenting criticizing the district.
The news of the parking fees was accompanied by two pages of single-spaced rules and regulations that will govern parking and driving in the school parking lot.

The rules include penalties for violations, including $10 fines for first offenses, $20 for second and possible revocation of parking privileges for subsequent offenses.Students are also told that when they arrive at school each day, they are to immediately leave their cars, making sure all doors are locked and windows rolled up and head straight into the building with no delays for conversations with other students who are arriving.
When they leave the building at the end of the school day, they are to head immediately to their cars without stopping to talk to anyone and leave the campus.
And, of course, there will be people whose duties include making sure students do not violate those rules.

They should also have to take a drug test. Parking is a privilege, just like playing sports...this would probably be quite the awakening for parents..just sayin...
It seems like you're trying to make something out of nothing here - $20 for the year is not bad...I think it used to be $8/semester, so that's not much of an increase. I haven't heard any students complain about it. However, my concern is that there don't seem to be nearly enough parking spots for all of the students who drive. Teachers alone would fill up half of that lot in front of the entrance, and the only other lot I see is the one on the south side in front of Franklin Tech. Am I missing something, or are they short by a few hundred spots? Does anyone have information on this?
I find it hard to think they can enforce this on students, didn't the taxpayers pay for this? How about just giving them the permit.

I think it is sad...they have to take money from the kid's. It was not the children that put them in the predicament they are in and the parent's and community have already paid and will continue to pay for the school for quite a while. Then they put a list of restrictions two pages long they must follow or they will lose what they have rightfully paid for?!?! will they even have enough parking space?Is it guaranteed that if you pay for 1 you will get a parking space? In my opinion this is the public school system parking should be provided for students as well as staff!!!
I feel sorry to the residents around the high school--I bet those streets will look like a parking lot once school starts.
Of course, maybe this will keep students a bit safer, since Judge Dally gives a wrist slap to a serial rapist who attacked a fellow student in the school parking lot.
Parking was $8 for the whole year.
This year will also have $50 for insurance (non-refundable)on computers. We'll pay since the computer is old and anything could go wrong, but that's a bit steep when none of it is refundable.

Perhaps some of the unhappy students should research what other large schools charge for parking and computer insurance, and if they really feel they have evidence that Joplin students are being charged too much, they can make a case for it. Otherwise, it's just so much complaining. Get the evidence, kids. Build a case.

Sooo...does purchasing a parking pass guarantee a parking spot? Or will there be kids who have bought passes but still have to park on the street?
I am so glad that my children go elsewhere for their education!! Some of the rules are ridiculous that I just read about! What happened to letting a kid be a kid?

As a product of the Joplin school system, I contend that you are both ill informed and slanderous in your blind allegations of my wonderful school system. I agree that, like every other school district in this great country, issues do exist. Yet I do not believe you have the intelligence or insight to speak of them. I am a senior and my peers agree that this fee is just in the protection it provides to prevent any harm that may come to us. I ask you to please make amends to the fact that you were not worthy of being a teacher in this fine district and move on because you are simply wasting your 1st amendment rights by posting in this blog. Furthermore, to the fine people who have commented, many of you simply have not taken the time to inform yourselves of the situation that has perplexed the high school. The purchase of the ribbon was extremely well researched and done in a way that saved a considerable amount. It was done not just for the school, but for the fine city that helped us take flight once again. Additionally, despite my disagreement with being called a "herd of sheep" I believe that you cannot put a price on the safety that the fee provides for the students of the JHS/FTC campus. As for the laptop fees, even the most miniscule amount of research will show you that the average fee for high school students that have the privilege of taking part in this form of 21st century learning is $75.00 per incident with very few offering an insurance plan under $100.00. The reason this parking fee is required is because driving in fact is a privilege. In a same way drivers pay tickets and taxes so that they can be protected by police officers, we are paying so that we may be safe. A free alternative to driving is offered to students in the form of bike racks for cyclist parking, sidewalks for walking, and a very accommodating bus system. You are extremely ignorant of the issues Randy Turner, please leave the employees and attendees of the Joplin School district alone because you are no more than an annoying hindrance to them.

Back when I went to Parkwood in the late '70s (what became the only high school that was then destroyed by the tornado), we didn't have any fees, stickers or explicit and unique rules that I can remember. There was a parking lot or two, we parked at it, it was simple and it worked fine.
I thought school was free?? This isn't a collage but they are making it seem like it. Do we need to pay for books? Oh wait we pay for computers instead. Students are going to park a block away just to not pay 20 bucks.

Wow. As a "product" of the Joplin school system also and a mother of children, education is supposed to be already paid for with our taxes. So, why charge for your "safety" shouldn't your "safety" already be a given? And when I was in school, the computers were in a lab, which granted weren't always convenient, but as someone who was in foster care and didn't have my own money and couldn't really ask my foster parents for the money, making students cover an insurance fee is ridiculous. We pulled our son from Joplin and we are trying homeschooling. My son was in Private school until tuition got too much for us (which was the 8th grade) That is when they gave him a lap top at school. He went from a straight A student to a D and F student with 37 missing assignments. I went to teachers and begged them to give him a consequence. (because in the real world, you don't get a redo. you get fired) they gave him to the end of the quarter to get them in! Which was almost a month! I was so flustered! I had no say in how this was handled and no control in my son's education! What happens when another tornado takes all these pretty buildings away again? What do we have? Nothing. Can you imagine what we could have used $11,000 in private donations for INSTEAD of a stupid ribbon cutting? $11,000 gone in one day! STUPID STUPID STUPID! BTW- I apologize for any typos, My vision is really blurry because of a medicine I am on. Please excuse any errors.
I have the same opinion as most of the contributors to this site about the joplin schools. I do, however, feel some form of dress code is not a total infringement of student rights. Maybe, these kids should not be allowed to wear pajama pants to school. I can't wear those at my job. So I guess I have a dress code where I work. Although, the parking lot rules seem a bit of an overkill, some rules are needed. It is against the rules to hang around and loiter on a public city parking lot. At some point, these students should be expected to get in their vehicle and move on. If left to the students, there would be no rules at all. Is that the answer?
To charge for parking in a public parking lot is insane.... We pay taxes for our students to attend school not to profit off of parking lot dues. Come on school board, where is the money going???
