For one of the few times since he became Joplin R-8 superintendent, the board did not follow Huff's recommendations with the Finance Committee working out a way for faculty and staff to receive raises.
From that point on, Huff has claimed that it was he who made sure the teachers received salary increases, even making that statement in meetings with faculty representatives.
And now Huff has formed a committee, headed by his COO Tina Smith to examine the salary schedules. The following e-mail was sent to staff November 4:
Dear Faculty and Staff,
Last year the Board approved our Standards of Excellence as the guiding document for the important work we will be doing in the coming years. One of the five standards clearly states that we will become the "Employer of Choice." Part of the work that must happen to meet that standard is a comprehensive salary and benefits review of Joplin Schools.
To that end, the Joplin Schools Salary and Benefits Committee met last night for the first time and has begun this important work. The following is a broad overview of the categories the committee will be reviewing for each job classification within the Joplin Schools:
Salary Schedule Review and Compensation Analysis
Competitive Benefits
Compensation for Added Responsibilities
Employee Recognition
Communication
More specific sub-categories will be reviewed in the coming weeks and months. The efforts of the committee will be communicated to you as the work progresses. In the meantime, expect to see a survey in the coming weeks to help the committee refine it's work. Clarity is needed and your voice is important. This survey will be an important piece of hearing your thoughts and good ideas.
Thanks in advance for your support of this effort.
For our kids,
CJ

For sale at Amazon: The book, a collection of writings by me and my former students at East Middle School following our first year in a warehouse school, includes their tornado stories and their adjustment to a different type of school. The book has taken on a whole new meaning since a federal report showed there was never a need to have a completely new East Middle School and some kids were kept in that warehouse for two and a half years. Copies are also available at Always Buying Books, Changing Hands Book Shop, Vintage Stock on the Mall in Joplin and Pat's Books in Carthage.

Give him credit. He started by making the Superintendent job very desirable. Exorbitant pay, and absolute power with no oversight or accountability. And oh yeah, a crack team of PR hacks to groom your image so that you may soar to even greater heights.
I am sure after each admin position is similarly upgraded, teachers will be next. Noncertified staff will get theirs eventually, and R8 will then become the employer of choice.
If we continue at the pace of the last sux years, this will be complete by 2114.
CJ Huff is fighting for teacher pay just as much as the Westboro Baptist Church is fighting for gay rights.
They've already been trickled down upon to the point where few will be believers.

He has already won the teachers' pay. He transfered it to himself and his staff.
Maybe he is fighting to get all of the teaches' pay.
They are trying to use the fast food business model. Pay one or two at the top to ride the people who actually add value, and then pay those actual producers as little as possible.
This only works in a down economy, and always comes back to bite the fools who do it. Look at the quality of fast food workers (overall) in a good economy.
The result is talent flite. Carl Junction, Webb City, Seneca, Neosho, et al. you are welcome. Enjoy Joplin's best.
