(From Sen. Claire McCaskill)
Republicans are now in charge of Congress, so I'm frankly stunned that they are putting our country at risk like this.
The Department of Homeland Security will run out of money this month unless Congress acts. But Republicans are irresponsibly playing politics with critical homeland security and counterterrorism resources by attaching controversial immigration policy riders to the funding bill.
In light of the threat of ISIS and recent events in Paris and elsewhere, the resources of our Homeland Security Department should NOT be tied to divisive political issues. For our safety, we have to keep this funding bill moving.
Join me now in calling on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to bring a clean funding bill to a vote and avert a Homeland Security shutdown over immigration.
Republicans run both houses of Congress, so if they want a debate on immigration, they can make Congress debate immigration.
Why hold our homeland security resources hostage?
Republicans must do their jobs debating real solutions like the comprehensive plan that passed the Senate with a two-thirds margin in the last Congress -- a plan I was proud to support, but that House Republicans refused to even debate.
Instead, those same elected officials are choosing to jeopardize crucial security funding.
Tell Republicans to debate immigration reform if they want changes and stop jeopardizing crucial security funding.
Republicans in the U.S. House have sat on their hands for a year and a half, refusing to even consider the Senate's bipartisan immigration reform bill. Their leaders can't just start playing shutdown politics now.
