Report recommends spending $13.2 million plus for Joplin R-8 facilities

Be prepared for the tax levy increase proposal that is surely heading our way.

The final report of the Long Range Facilities Committee will be presented to the Joplin R-8 Board of Education when it meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday and it includes a recommended $13.2 million in expenditures over the next five years.

Superintendent C. J. Huff has been talking about the need for a levy increase to accomplish the things that needed to be done in the school district and during the August board meeting, the board took steps that would permit them to go for a levy increase this year if it decides on that route.

Committee members who asked what the district could pay for were told not to worry about that and just determine what is needed.

One thing that is not being recommended is new carpeting for the administration as it moves into the Memorial Middle School building. The Huff Administration will recommend spending $59,264 on that, an item which, as usual, can be found in the board's consent agenda.

These are the expenditures that the report recommends and what year the projects would be done:

Is this after the additional 14 million dollar loan that only one out of 15 banks approved them for less than a month ago?! RIDICULOUS!

What is not listed is the $600,000 per year for the overages at the high school. It is coming out of the capital budget for the next five years. What about the remaining current budget of $900,000 that is already budgeted. Shouldn't these items come from the budget??

Randy-please note as a followup to the St. Joseph school audit

St. Joseph dumps its superintendent after a scathing audit. The school board voted 6-0 to start termination procedures on Friday.

To me this basically tells me that they will not be tearing down and building new West Central or Columbia schools. Instead just patching up the old buildings. Also some of these schools were just repainted after the tornado, why do they need painted again?
