Hartzler: Obama gun proposal would not stop Islamic extremists, mentally ill

(From Fourth District Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler)

Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (R-Mo.) released the following statement in response to President Obama’s announced unilateral and unconstitutional proposals to restrict Americans from rightfully purchasing and owning firearms:

Time and again, the President has shown his eagerness to restrict law-abiding Americans from owning firearms; going so far as sidestepping the Constitutional separation of powers and acting unilaterally to advance his unpopular agenda. Instead of addressing the rise of ISIS and the effects of mental illness, he is using tragic incidents as an excuse to infringe on the rights of law-abiding citizens. This is wrong and must not be allowed.

Missourians and Americans everywhere are understandably troubled by the tragic shootings that have occurred across our nation, but the President’s proposal to make gun ownership more difficult would not have stopped Islamic extremists or mentally ill people from committing the acts they did. Only solid foreign policy and leadership will. That should be the president’s focus.

I join gun-owning, law-abiding citizens across the country who want to keep criminals and extremists from using firearms against our fellow neighbors, friends, and family; but we need to stand up for our Constitutional rights while also looking at the root causes of violence. We can do both.

If you are a law abiding American citizen and free from mental defect, these proposals won't effect you.
How does she equate closing gun purchase loop-holes with a gun grab ideology?

"free from mental defect" is a wide enough "loophole" to ban most everyone who wants to own a gun, especially since plenty of gun grabbers think that desire alone is a sign of mental illness. And for those who have minor mental issues, but are no danger to others or likely themselves, do you want to discourage them from seeking help?

The only "gun purchase loop-hole" is that private in-state sales don't require background checks. If you want require people get the permission of the government for all those transfers, including temporary ones like when hunting in a group, target shooting, etc., as has been done in Colorado, Washington state and most recently Oregon, thanks to billionaire Bloomberg's money, you're our enemy. For these measures strike directly at the heart of US gun culture, trying to curtail teaching new would-be gun owners.

Look, if there was any doubt Obama wasn't operating in good faith, his twice praising Australia's 1996 and 2004 gun confiscations removed all doubt. Therefore we gun owners are entitled to view all of his gun control proposals with a skeptical eye, he's made it crystal clear what his real objective is.
