(From Fifth District Congressman Emanuel Cleaver)
As 2016 comes to a close, I want to take this time to say thank you. Thank you to everyone reading this newsletter. Thank you for your time, your comments, and your support throughout this year.
We have had an eventful year, tackling several important issues. And I didn’t do it alone. It was a collective effort, from both parties, to bring significant and meaningful results to the 5th District and to the citizens of this country.
We managed to push a comprehensive housing bill through the House of Representatives and the Senate that will allow long-awaited and needed changes to public, rural, and veteran housing - changes that have not been seen in more 30 years. We secured water improvement projects in the 5th District in Missouri’s flood prone areas. We fought, and continue to fight, to protect the pensions of thousands of retirees facing drastic and unforeseen cuts. We successfully advocated for technology companies to make changes to their policies and procedures to ensure they were including and treating minorities fairly. We continue to work on economic growth and vitality in the rural areas and make it a point to remember and serve our veterans.
Don’t get me wrong, this year hasn’t been easy. My colleagues and I spent the night sleeping on the House floor during an historic sit-in to demand action against gun violence. There’s still more work to be done as we must figure out a way to end violent attacks against the innocent. And Congress must find a way to work together.
On January 3, 2017, we have new opportunity in the New Year when we swear in Members of the 115th Congress. It’s time to come together to work for the best interests of our constituents, to encourage growth and development in our Midwestern communities, and to fight for the new opportunities for our families.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!
