The Barton County Health Department is reporting its first confirmed case of COVID-19 in Barton County. The case was community acquired.
To protect the privacy of the individual and their family, we will not release individually identifiable details. The individual is Quarantined and being monitored closely by the Barton County Health Department.
The Barton County Health Department, as part of the disease investigation, will determine and notify any close contacts with the individual. Those person(s) will be provided with specific instructions on appropriate social distancing, monitoring, and immediate actions should they develop signs and symptoms of COVID-19.
COVID-19, which stands for coronavirus disease 2019, is the name of the illness that first appeared in late 2019 in Wuhan, China, before spreading to other countries, including the U.S. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common in people and many species of animals
Symptoms — cough, fever, difficulty breathing — may occur two days to two weeks after exposure. Although most of the cases have been mild, the disease is especially dangerous for the elderly and others with weaker immune systems.
To be evaluated for symptoms of COVID-19, or if symptoms worsen, we ask individuals to call their local medical provider or hospital before seeking treatment. People who feel they might have the virus need to give health care providers a warning so safety precautions can be taken before their arrival to help prevent the infection of health care workers and others at the facility.
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is operating a hotline for residents and health care providers to call for information and guidance about COVID-19. The statewide hotline number is 877-435-8411. The hotline is being operated by medical professionals and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The Barton County Office of Emergency Management, as directed by Emergency Declaration of the County Commission, has activated the Barton County Emergency Operations Center in support of the Public Health and Emergency Response and Recovery to COVID-19. Barton County Emergency Management and Health Department Officials will be working very closely with State and Federal partners to ensure that all necessary and available resources are provided to support the responders, healthcare providers, and citizens of Barton County.
