April 2 is election day in Joplin and city council candidates are on the ballot. Six people are running. Three of them are unopposed while three others are vying for two general council seats.
Missouri Southern State University Department of Communication Television Station KGCS is hosting a forum to get-to-know the candidates and future council members.
Running unopposed are: Incumbent Charles “Chuck” Copple in Zone II, Ryan Jackson in Zone III and Doris Carlin for a 2-year general seat term.
Two General Seats with 4-year terms are open. Seeking those are: Mayor Pro Tem Keenan Cortez, Joshua Bard and Natasha Klue-Michael. The City Council Candidate Forum will allow candidates to introduce themselves and their campaign goals.
A series of questions will be asked of all candidates about city issues. Questions have been compiled in part by students in the MSSU Local and State Government class.
The forum is being held at Joplin City Hall in the council chambers beginning at 7:00 p.m. Monday, March 25. The public and media are invited to attend. The forum will be broadcast live on KGCS-TV and recorded for replay on March 26 & 28 at 6:00 p.m. It will also be posted on the station’s YouTube channel: KGCS - Missouri Southern State University.
KGCS programming can be seen on channel 21 and is also available on regional cable television systems such as Sparklight, Mediacom and Suddenlink Communications. The station operates as a service of the Department of Communications at Missouri Southern State University.

Key questions for the candidates:
1. will you commit to freezing property taxes for Joplin homeowners?
2. will you commit to blocking DIE/IED programs for Joplin City government?
Note: this forced equity program was proposed previously by current Council members and was voted down after multiple citizen concerns were raised. Will you vote against it again if it is raised by Council members or the current or new Mayor?
3. will you commit to programs that decrease the homeless population in Joplin since a significant proportion of these individuals participate in drug trafficking, arson, vandalism, and criminal activity and are dependent on illegal drugs, or are mentally ill, or both?

Businesses for a Better Joplin funds and organizes the campaign for 'yes' and renewal.
It is a subsidiary of the Joplin Chamber.
The Chamber of Commerce gets 275$K from the City to operate.
