Local NAACP to hold forum for Joplin R-8 Board of Education candidates

(From NAACP)

NAACP Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) Chapter will host a Joplin School Board Candidate Forum at Joplin’s Memorial Education Center (825 S Pearl) on Monday, March 25, 2024, at 6:30 PM.

During this public forum Taija Jones, president of the newly formed NAACP MSSU Chapter will moderate a discussion about pressing issues within the school district and their proposed solutions. The forum will be an insightful and engaging evening where you can learn about the candidates' visions for the district and their commitment to our schools.

The NAACP has highlighted the significance of an inclusive educational system that commences at the community level, focusing on advocating for equity and driving progress for all students. With the Joplin School Board elections quickly approaching this free School Board Candidate Public Forum is of utmost importance as four candidates are vying for two spots on the school board. The candidates include the incumbents Rylee Hartwell and John Hird, as well as challengers Derek Gander and Victor Sly.

Serita Eldridge, President of the NAACP Joplin Branch said “This opportunity to hear from candidates is essential as we collectively work towards a more inclusive and enriched educational environment for all students. Regardless of attendance, we encourage everyone to get out and vote on April 2nd. Many only vote during presidential elections but voting for the people running our city and our schools is just as important as voting for the people who run our country.”

Following the forum, someone will be available to answer questions about voting and voter registration. On, April 2nd citizens will also vote for five City Council members and the Renewal of the Capital Improvement Sales Tax, “Proposition Progress.” More information about the election can be found on the City of Joplin’s website https://www.joplinmo.org/142/Elections.

We look forward to your participation and valuable input. You can watch this forum on Facebook Live (https://www.facebook.com/JoplinNAACP). The NAACP Joplin Branch can be contacted via email at NAACPJoplinbranch4065@gmail.com

I would hope in this day and age people would for vote the content of their character and not the color of their skin.

Can't trust most white people though.

@12:51 That’s mighty racist to judge an entire group of people based on the color of their skin. I hope it’s sarcasm.

Anonymous said...

Just ask the NAACP. If you can't make it ab out race it simply does not exist.

Hey! Stick to the plumbing business. Your money and nepotistic inheritance does not qualify you to speak to the complicated race relations or the need for equity in Southwest Missouri, where you have spent the entirety of your incredibly narrow existence. Fool.

So much for the zero tolerance policy on racism in the comments section the Turner Report was so staunchly opposed to a short time ago. It must depend on what group it is aimed at.

It’s almost like several centuries of slavery and racial oppression necessitated an organization to advocate for the rights of POC. Read a history book. Like I said, you are a narrow minded, racist fool.

You should see the comments I'm rejecting.

Lol. Racism. Do you feel oppressed, @6:50? #snowflake

The MAGAt movement is a racially motivated malignancy.

The NAACP is a lot like the ADL is for Jews…doing daily disservice to those they are supposed to represent.

Anonymous said...

Lots of uhmerrycans in swmo are racists, but they sure think they don't stink.

Anonymous said...

Picturing you like a goalie blocking the n word, Randy.

Anonymous said...

Are you Jewish or a person of color? My guess is no. But you feel qualified to speak on such matters? Oh yes,… because you watched a segment on Fox News. Or MAYBE, you read about it on the Matt Walsh blog. Intellectual powerhouses.

A candidate forum hosted by the NAACP for Joplin Schools is admirable, especially considering the recent messes in Webb City Schools.

Ask each candidate: do you support mandatory DIE/IED/DEI education and policy implementation in the Joplin school district for all employees and contractors?
Equity means equal outcomes for all favored and defined identity groups.
For example, equal graduation rates for White, Hispanic, Asian and Black students.
Diversity means hiring and promotion policies that reflect the exact percentages of defined identity groups in US society, or in Joplin.
Identity groups to assess and measure are usually defined by a DIE/DEI official committee of the school district. In essence diversity as used here is the antithesis of hiring by merit or experience, or qualifications.
Inclusion means including certain identity groups or individuals and excluding others.

It seems the NAACP is seeking to implement these mandatory policies for our district.
I may be wrong, I guess.

Couple guys I used to work with would say institutional racism doesn't exist because we had a black president and the civil rights act and blah blah blah. They'd never lived outside of Jasper County, but were obviously experts on the state of social and economic history and situations locally and nationally, of course. Eh. Such a shame the rest of our You Knighted States aren't as progressive as we is here in JopliHomo.

Wishful thinking 1223. Anyone who votes for trump is racist, or at least denies that racism is a problem. Guilty either way and furthermore, they alone, assure our society will never have equal opportunity to all.

Anonymous said...

Get over it, people of all color have been slaves, you don’t hear me whining about it.

Anonymous said...

257 is an insensitive bloke.

Anonymous said...

Nothing proves you might be a racist like denying that you might be a racist!

Anonymous said...

The sponsor of this has an obvious agenda. For that reason, I will not vote for their candidate. DEI will be the downfall of this once great nation.

The critics of this NAACP forum have an obvious agenda.

"If we can organize the Southern States for massive resistance to this order I think that, in time, the rest of the country will realize that racial integration is not going to be accepted in the South.”
Senator Harry Flood Byrd, 1954

3:38, No I’m just accurate and to the point, you’re feelings don’t trump my facts. ,

Anonymous said...

A line ripped from the Matt Walsh handbook :) Where are your “facts?” When have white people been enslaved here in this country? I can tell you, with the way conservatives whine about equity instruction, if your ancestors had once been enslaved, you would, in fact, be whining about it. The facts are that African Americans were enslaved right here for well over 400 years, the only developed country to do so. And then there was legal segregation and terror campaigns that occurred within our parents’ lifetimes. Ignoring or twisting facts don’t make them go away, unfortunately. People like you necessitate the existence like the NAACP. Again, why does this forum threaten you? Bigotry exists, unfortunately, despite your “feelings” about it.

Anonymous said...

@3:24- Also, before you start trying to school people on facts, work on simple things, like the difference between “your” (a possessive) and “you’re” (a contraction).

Anonymous said...

The “downfall” of our great nation is firmly rooted in the MAGA cult, who engenders Americans most base instincts of domestic racism, xenophobia, and unbridled nepotism. Remember January 6th? Democracy is crumbling. You are correct, but to blame DEI is insane. Look in a mirror.

Anonymous said...

The fact that this, or matters of equity instruction are such hot button issues in the 21st century demonstrate the corrosive power of the MAGA cult. They set us back 60 years.

Anonymous said...

Heartwarming to see so many anti MAGAts who have the decency and intelligence to not be led by fear and misinformation spoken from the orange fat bastard and his deplorable minions. Sen. Murkowski of Alaska just gave the OFB and the rest of the cult the middle finger. Not exactly a profile in courage, but we'll take it.

704. When the drug addicted felon had a heart attack while resisting arrest in Minneapolis and the city burned and looted without repercussions……that’s when the one demographic felt untouchable. It continues today. The racial divide is wide, deep and never will be healed. Happy Easter.

Anonymous said...

I laughed when Derek Chauvin got jumped and lit up in prison.

REST IN POWER GEORGE FLOYD

Anonymous said...

And it will never be healed because of arrogant, ignorant, narrow minded attitudes such as yours. You and those like you are what is wrong with America.

Today is Palm Sunday. Christ has a lot to endure before Easter arrives.

Do better.

As long as individuals like 935 breath and occupy space, there will always be fear of anyone not white. This is a generational curse on all persuasions of Caucasian people. Make no mistake, the curse is taught and reinforced by people like 935,and 257. They're both borish losers.

Anonymous said...

The demographic? Say what you mean. And what about Kyle Rittenhouse? White people, especially in provincial, good old boy towns like Joplin, have been untouchable since the inception of this country. You are deluding yourself if you believe otherwise. But if you’re benefitting from such a system, you would have reason, I guess, to continue to lean on the kind of philosophies which are modern day extensions as those of the Klan. You want certain “demographics” to know their place so you can maintain your place. That’s the truth. Do you some deep reflection.

Anonymous said...

America is splintered and is in serious trouble, folks

Anonymous said...

Rittenhouse is a murderer and a MAGAt poster child.

9:35 didn’t say anything that wasn’t accurate, if it hurt your feelings too bad toughen up he/she/they/them/me/her/cousin it/ cousin Eddie/ non Bianary whooosy what’s it.

Here we have, another so-called patriot and member of the party of law-and-order ladies and gentlemen.

Crapping their lies and false equivalence all over the comments, as those deplorables do.

You know, the kind of deplorables who cheer a Black man getting shot or strangled to death by police or armed vigilantes for a minor crime but cheer on people violently attempting a coup to steal an election in order to install their mango moron and his nepotistic minions.

In today’s GOP, you get all kinds of cheers and fist bumps for being a criminal. Funny how they think Black people admire criminality, when it is the so called 'family values conservatives' who support it and frequently participate in it.

They violently invade the US Capital with weapons and a fake gallows, pursue members of congress, and their support groups in the right wing media label it a tourist excursion.

Just like all the lies the right whingers posted above.

Isn't it amazing how they do that- and they do it every time!

They have problems alright, but the problems aren't the NAACP's election forum, or any other NAACP activity.

Anonymous said...

6:34 what are your pronouns? That’s right it’s your party, Dem party was against abolishing slavery…..

Randy said...

That is the last time any comments will include the stupid "what are your pronouns" line. I am also eliminating any more uses of the "orange bastard" references to Trump. Perhaps they were amusing the first time the phrases were used, but they're tiresome now and serve no purpose other than to anger people who disagree with you. Please try using reason and common sense to make your points.

Anonymous said...

When you have no substantial argument, you go to the pronoun bit. So clever! And lol. Every educated person knows that the political parties have evolved in the last 160 years. Lincoln would roll over in his grave if he could see what his party has become- a disgusting perversion of what once was. Nice try!

The Democratic Party defended slavery, started the Civil War, opposed Reconstruction,
founded the Ku Klux Klan, imposed segregation, perpetrated lynchings, and fought against
the civil rights acts of the 1950s and 1960s.
Seems like your time line might be off.

Anonymous said...

You are a useful idiot.

@3:05 yes, all the things MAGA cult members stand for today. You think you stand for liberty, but you’re really just a sheep who is easily fooled. Again, nice try.
