Former Cherokee County deputy Garrett Gayoso, 24, failed to show for his probable cause hearing in Bristol County, Massachusetts District Court Thursday on child sex charges.
The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office placed Gayoso on administrative leave in April after the Fall River Massachusetts Police Department said it was investigating the deputy for what was described as "an inappropriate relationship between the deputy and the juvenile victim," in a Sheriff's Office news release.
Gayoso later resigned.
The Bristol County District's Attorney's office charged Gayoso with three felonies.
-Sending obscene matter to a child
-Posing, exhibiting a nude child
-Posing/exhibiting a child sex act
When the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office was notified that a nationwide warrant had been issued for Gayoso's arrest, "efforts were made to contact Gayoso and take him into custody, however, he was not located," according to a news release.
"We were later contacted by his attorney who advised that plans have been made for Gayoso to surrender himself to law enforcement authorities in Massachusetts."
After Gayoso surrendered, a judge released him on $1,000 bond, despite a request from the Bristol County District Attorney's office that bond be set at $10,000.
The preliminary hearing has been rescheduled to October 2.
