Billy Long: IRS conduct has a chilling effect on right to free speech

(From Seventh District Congressman Billy Long)

U.S. Rep. Billy Long issued the following statement after voting on a Resolution of Contempt against former IRS official Lois Lerner and a resolution calling for the appointment of a special counsel to investigate the IRS:

"Today's vote could have been avoided if Lois Lerner simply complied with the House's investigation to uncover who directed the IRS to target Americans because of their political beliefs. The IRS, or any government entity, should not be used to target people who exercise their right to free speech. The American people want to know who directed the IRS to harass Americans for their beliefs.

"The IRS' conduct appears widespread and almost certainly has a chilling effect on the right to free speech. It is imperative we get answers for the American people and hold those who are found guilty responsible. I appreciate the thorough investigation into this matter by my House colleagues in an effort to restore the people's trust in our government. I support the effort to name a special counsel to continue this investigation into the IRS because I believe the Justice Department should uncover the truth in this case even if the evidence leads to somewhere uncomfortable for the administration.
