Hispanic leader says Americans were first to cross border illegally

An interesting perspective on the current immigration situation was offered by Jose Garcia, a professor at University of Missouri Extension at an Ozarks Regional Alliance meeting recently in Monett, according to a Monett Times article.
Garcia says history shows that it was originally Americans who crossed the border to enter lands owned by Mexico at the time, and later during the Depression, half a million Hispanics who were U. S. citizens were illegally deported.

Illegals are just trying to justify their illegal existance in our country.

I suggest those who complain about the "treatment of the Indian" read a bit of history about Indian activities before and after the arrival of white settlers. Talk about stealing from someone, tribe after tribe attacked each other, stealing horses, children, young boys, food, weapons, and forcing the losing tribe to move away to other places. The picture of the nature-worshipping, peaceful Indians who were put upon by whites is very inaccurate. They fought each other just as whites fought them.

And if you think the Mexican government (if you could call it that) had any claims on the border lands then you again failed to read history.

As one with much Indian blood, I don't buy the argument that white men were any worse than the Indian people they defeated. Sorry.

The United States has been provoking wars for a good long time.

One need only go back to the sinking of the Maine or the Gulf of Tonkin incident to see how wars get started.

Our problem is that for many years the U.S. govt. has responded with "benign neglect" regarding this problem. As a result our farms and turkey plants got the cheap labor provided by undocumented workers and the corporate farmers and companies pocketed the savings.

Now that the number of illegals has grown to 12-20 million (some say more) it has suddenly become a pressing national problem.

Our ancestors were looking for a better life but America's treatment of the Indian was shameful.

Let's try to find an equitable way to deal with this problem--putting the responsibility for documentation on companies BEFORE they hire illegals.

After all, the Mexicans who come here are coming to escape poverty. You can't blame them for that.
