Joplin man with four previous drunk driving convictions, charged with DWI, meth possession

A Carthage Police Department traffic stop Friday resulted in driving while intoxicated and methamphetamine possession charges being filed against Walter John Kelly (DOB 1968), Joplin.

The DWI charge is a felony since Kelly was convicted of drunk driving in 2005, 2007, 2016 and 2019.

The police pulled Kelly over in the 1300 block of West Central for improper registration, according to the probable cause statement, which said a subsequent search uncovered a green baggie filled with meth.

Police noticed an odor of alcohol on Kelly's breath, the probable cause statement said. His blood alcohol content was 0.101.

Kelly was also charged with driving while revoked, the fifth time he has been cited on that charge in the past eight months.
