Joplin sex offender charged with assaulting girlfriend

The Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney's office filed a third-degree domestic assault charge today against a Joplin man who allegedly beat his girlfriend Thursday after threatening to kill her and her mother if they told the police that he was a non-compliant sex offender.

According to Missouri State Highway Patrol records Scott Michael Morgan, 37, was convicted of sexual misconduct involving a 16-year-old boy in Joplin in 2012.

I located the victim inside the business standing at the counter. The victim was crying, shaking and had swelling and discoloration on the right side of her face. {She} stated that she and her boyfriend, Scott Morgan, had been driving around all afternoon.

Morgan was angry with her and kept getting more angry. Just prior to my dispatch, victim had pulled into a local business (Pete's) to buy a bottle of water. When victim returned to the car, Morgan threatened to kill {her} and {her} mother is she reported his non-compliance as a registered sex offender to police.

Morgan then struck {her} twice in the right side of her face with an open hand.

Victim pulled into Discount Smokes, 1209 E. Pennell, and went inside. While she did this, Morgan fled on foot. Morgan was not located at the time of report.

The case was investigated by the Carl Junction Police Department.
