GateHouse Media cutting 60 jobs in Massachusetts

GateHouse Media is cutting 80 jobs from its Massachusetts newspaper, according to an article in the Boston Globe:

GateHouse Media Inc. is cutting 60 positions at its Massachusetts publications, including The Patriot Ledger in Quincy, The Enterprise of Brockton, and dozens of suburban papers,

There will be 35 layoffs, and the company is not filling 25 vacant jobs at various papers and departments, said the employee, who requested anonymity because the person is not authorized to discuss the matter publicly. The cuts represent about 4.6 percent of GateHouse's Massachusetts employment of about 1,300 full-time workers.

Rick Daniels, chief operating officer of GateHouse Media New England, declined to comment.

Daniels may not want to comment but I have a couple of things to say. First, it never ceases to amaze me how the same people who are critical of politicians or businessmen who refuse to comment on matters of public interests so casually employ the same method of communicating the public. It seems hypocritical. Also, it bothers me that Daniels and others like him feel that 60 people losing their jobs is not worthy of comment.

GateHouse Media, of course, owns The Carthage Press, Neosho Daily News, Big Nickel, Pittsburg Morning Sun, and hundreds of other publications.

Rick Daniels – Buffoon of the Year

Gatehouse Media’s Chief Operating officer Rick Daniels has won this years’ Buffoon award for his decided lack-of-integrity and openness.

Mr. Daniels’ operating philosophy seems to be: It’s my property and I’ll lie if I want to”.

Throughout the year Mr. Daniels allowed The Hingham Journal to make news as opposed to report the news. He allowed the Journal to publish yellow- news articles without both sides of an issue. He consistently allowed ignoring relevant fats, with the intent to portray a false sense of reality – thereby instilling false confidence in its readership.

Mr. Daniels is as guilty as Bernard L. Madoff is a thief. His behavior presumably was transferred to every Gatehouse property in New England. Thus, many gets the AX except without a comment.

It’s remarkable to note that Daniels, just another Hingham lawyer, prefers the words: no comment. Also when Mr. Daniels decided to cut 60 positions in New England – he did not cut himself nor did he reduce his compensation.

The Turner Report * says: “Daniels may not want to comment but I have a couple of things to say. First, it never ceases to amaze me how the same people who are critical of politicians or businessmen who refuse to comment on matters of public interests so casually employ the same method of communicating the public. It seems hypocritical. Also, it bothers me that Daniels and others like him feel that 60 people losing their jobs is not worthy of comment.”

Mr. Daniels’ position requires his to know what his publications are doing and he does not. What then does Mr. Daniels do all day?
