Faculty unionizing at Missouri Southern; where is the Joplin Globe?

The news has been on the blogosphere since Southern Watch broke it April 30, yet not a word has been written in the Joplin Globe (as far as I can determine) about efforts to unionize the faculty at Missouri Southern State University.

Perhaps the Globe is waiting to cover the initial meeting, which is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. today. Faculty membere were told in an e-mail earlier this week that an organizational meeting for a local chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). Reportedly, at least three dozen faculty members have been involved in the union effort.

Perhaps the Globe is simply planning to do a followup on the meeting, make one phone call to University President Bruce Speck and ask him what he thinks about it.

Or there could be a well-balanced story in which the Globe not only calls Speck, but Board of Governors President Dwight Douglas for response.

Today's meeting is a big one as far as Missouri Southern State University is concerned. The coverage of that meeting shoud tell a lot about the Joplin Globe's integrity...or lack thereof.

Don't count on it.The Globe already has an excuse: storm damage. They've got to cover that! But if they do, you can count on Melissa Dunson taking the easy way out and just talk to Bruce only... Douglas? That'd be a stretch.. she would probably find a faculty who would say wonderful things about Speck and offer that as "faculty opinion"

Balanced coverage? she doesn't know the meaning of the term... don't think the Globe does either...
