Carthage man bound over for trial for murder of Raymond Ritchhart

The man accused of killing 87-year-old Raymond Ritchhart of Carthage waived his preliminary hearing today and was bound over for trial.

Brian Benefiel faces charges of first degree murder, first degree burglary, and armed criminal action. His next hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. June 2, in Jasper County Circuit Court Division 3.

Benefiel's wife, Kelli Benefiel, has also been bound over for trial on the same charges.

The Benefiels, who were neighbors of Mr. Ritchhart, were allegedly surprised by him while they were burglarizing his home at 1237 Douglas Court looking for prescription drugs. Police say they beat and stabbed Ritchhart to death.
