Associated Press reports that during this last week of the 2014 legislative session, the so called Nullification Bill, which says, in effect, we're Missouri and we are not going to obey any federal gun laws, is once again front and center.
At issue is a portion of the bill that decides how the state will punish federal agents who dare to try to enforce gun laws while they are in the Show-Me State:
Sen. Brian Nieves, R-Washington, of course, is the one who is pushing for stiff penalties.
“The whole intent of that bill was to create a healthy pause on the part of any federal law enforcement officer that’s going to come to Missouri and violate the Second Amendment rights of Missourians,” Nieves said.
On the House side, Rep. Doug Funderburk, R-St. Peters, takes issue with Nieves' stance, but his reasoning allows us to see just how out of control our state legislature is.
“I don’t want to risk a good law enforcement officer’s career on the potential that they may have a one-time mistake in the carrying out of their duties,” said Rep. Doug Funderburk, R-St. Peters.
How generous of Funderburk to not want to harm a law enforcement officer's career because that officer is upholding the law.
As usual, our elected officials are living down to our expectations.
