Following is the news release from State Auditor Thomas Schweich:
State Auditor Tom Schweich announced today thatsupporters of a petition audit of the City of Joplin turned in 5,079 signatures to obtain the audit.
After 2,000 signatures were verified by the Jasper County Clerk, the counting process stopped
since supporters obtained more than the required 1,776.
The estimated cost of the audit is between $95,000 and $145,000. Schweich said he and his
auditors are looking forward to completing the audit on behalf of those who signed the petition
and everyone who has expressed concerns about the city.
"We are appreciative of the confidence the citizens of Joplin have placed in our office to do a fair
and thorough audit of the city," Schweich said. "We see this audit as a positive way to continue
the dialogue on how to help Joplin move forward both financially and administratively."

Did we have a choice in offices? He makes it sound like we did. Of course we expect a fair and thorough audit of the city. But then again, when their office is the only game in town so to speak...who's to say how good their product is.
If we were convinced that any audit by their office would have been a whitewash, we wouldn't have bothered to sign the petition.
