No more Dillon's in Joplin

This report from KOAM News offers details on the closing of Dillon's Pharmacy on Rangeline and Dillon's decision not to rebuild its grocery store, which was destroyed in the May 22, 2011, tornado.
We were already thinking that Dillon's was not coming back, but it still is painful to hear it confirmed. The store was always one of my favorites.

The decision to close this store was made at least a month ago.
Dillons/Kroger doesn't even have the courtesy to let their
Customers know ahead of time to allow them to change their scripts to another pharmacy.

The individuals who worked at this store-6 of them- were left jobless by this decision. HR made no offer to assist them in their displacement. To the President of this company- I hope you choke on the money you are saving by closing this store.

Good riddance Dillon's. Take your crappy treatment of the people of Joplin elsewhere. We will miss you Chad, Daniel, Kevin, Sharon, Nancy, Becca. Please let us know when you go to another pharmacy - we will come to you!

Very untrue. Many friends of mine worked there for 20 years+. They got a thousand dollars every year they worked.

I miss Dillon's.
And I'm very disappointed to know they treated their employees that way.

@5:14- none of the people who were laid off got a thousand dollars for the years they worked.
In that case, Nancy - who has worked there for 30 years- would walk away with a $30,000 year severance package.

Didn't happen. Everyone will get their last check and that's it. Check your facts.

Maybe Randy would like to interview the employees to find out what happened.

They had to have some idea that it might happen after they closed all of their Springfield grocery stores.

Can't say I cared that they didn't rebuild--the pre-tornado store was dirty and rundown. If they weren't willing to clean it (and the one in Pittsburg looks shabby, too), I'm not surprised they wouldn't spend the money to build a new one.

End of an era I suppose. I left Dillons long ago to save money at Aldi but I did like the freestanding pharmacy. Very sad.

Dillon's (Kroger) has significant financial problems like most grocery store chains who are suffocating under the weight of Wal-Mart. Beyond Kroger's woes, the other issue at play here is that Joplin is having a hard time attracting grocery store chains to the EDR -- along 20th, at 26th and Main as originally planned, and the like. The recovery has only focused on (lackluster) commercial development and has failed to address neighborhood restoration altogether. The City is using a suburban development model (in part thanks to Wallace-Bajalli) instead of an urban redevelopment model. If a grocery chain can't count enough residential rooftops, it won't locate or rebuild.

I think they gouged their customers. Except for sale items, their prices were way too high. I think they took advantage of their older clientele. No loss to Joplin.

I did read recently that Kroger had an interest in buying the Jacksonville, Florida based Winn-Dixie grocery chain.

I absolutely agree with 7:16--I had a few things I bought there only because I couldn't find them elsewhere. Their prices were too high.

Get over yourselves, Dillons sucked by any measure. Reminds me of a Homer Simpson quote, "It tastes like crap, but you get a lot of it." We deserve better.
