So you want to be a Joplin High School athletic director

The Joplin R-8 School District posted an advertisement for athletic director on the district website Friday.

Position: Athletic Director
Term: 12 Months

Classification: Certified/Exempt

Location: Joplin High School

Qualifications: MO Teaching Certificate, and Masters Degree in School Administration
or Masters Degree in Athletic Administration

Supervisory: Yes

Reports to: Assistant Superintendent of Operations

  • Ensures that all activities conform to district, state, or federal guidelines.

Essential Functions:
  • Provides vision and leadership for the athletic programs.  
  • Facilitate meetings and workshops including annual meetings with parents, student-athletes, and coaches pertaining to athletic program goals, expectations, and sportsmanship.
  • Annually develop goals and action plans with stakeholders, and oversee the implementation of action plans, monitor progress, and make necessary adjustments.
  • Communicate and monitor standards of expected performance for all programs with processes developed and articulated for continuous improvement.
  • Effectively implement evaluation strategies oriented toward improvement of coaching and district programs.
  • Provide for systematic, systemic, aligned programs within an integrated system of support for student-athletes and coaches.
  • Provide for the management of the athletic programs. Including the effective supervision of all activities (i.e. supervisors, gate workers, scorekeepers, concessions, etc.)
  • Manage, and develop, budgets and allocation of expenditures,  and monitor fund balances for the purpose of managing district resources in an effective and efficient manner within rules, regulations, and board of education policies.
  • Demonstrates effective skill in the recruitment, selection, and assignment of physical education teachers and all coaches.
  • Promotes and supports ongoing staff development of the coaches.
  • Researches a wide variety of topics for the purpose of developing new programs, services, and ensure program compliance with established requirements.
  • Provides leadership for implementation and organization of an athletic handbook for all sports.
  • Monitors, supports, and provides expectations and evaluation of the athletic office staff.
  • Provides for effective and efficient day-by-day operation of the athletic programs and district facilities.  Including determining eligibility of student-athletes and students in activities when applicable.
  • Ensures that school athletic facilities are conducive to a safe play and works with district personnel to ensure adequate facilities are maintained properly.
  • Ensures efficient management of fiscal athletic resources level.  Including proper oversight of all athletic fundraisers
  • Promotes and maintains a positive athletic program climate.  
  • Establishes and oversees effective discipline by coaches pertaining to players, and effectively monitors the school drug testing program.
  • Maintains and oversees all practice schedules. And provides for adequate facilities and accommodations for coaches and players.
  • Maintains a calendar of events for the use of district facilities as they pertain to district athletics and major activities for the district.  
  • Ensure that all district policies are followed.
  • Oversees and supervises the cleaning of uniforms and storage of all athletic equipment.
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with students, staff, and all stakeholders and responds to issues involving staff conflicts, regulations community concerns, parental requests that may result in negative impact or liability concerns.
  • Implements the policies and procedures of the district.
  • Actively participates in the MSHSAA, the Joplin Sports Authority Committee, and attends Regional AD meetings.
  • Works annually to improve performance by attending workshops, PD activities, and eliciting help strategies from other ADs or schools.
  • Carry out all other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands
An individual who holds this position must frequently move in and around buildings and grounds to visit classrooms, attend meetings and supervise bus loading and unloading areas and sit for an hour or more at a time, and lift up to 25 pounds.

Attendance
Regular and consistent attendance is an essential function of this position.

Conditions and Environment
The work environment is consistent with a typical school office environment; however the individual who holds this position will occasionally be required to be outside in temperatures below freezing and above 100 degrees. The individual who holds this position is frequently required to work irregular or extended hours.
