The Joplin R-8 School District posted an opening on the district website today for a high school graduation coach.

The position, which appears to be a newly created one, is a nine-month job, same as a teacher's and requires a bachelor's degree, but a master's degree is preferred. The requirements are printed below:

Overview: As a High School Graduation Coach, you will play a pivotal role in supporting and guiding high school students towards successful completion of their academic requirements and attainment of their diplomas. You will work closely with students, teachers, counselors, and administrators to address barriers to graduation, provide academic support, and foster a positive and motivating environment conducive to student success.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Student Guidance and Support:
    • Provide personalized guidance and support to high school students to ensure they meet graduation requirements.
    • Conduct regular check-ins with students to assess academic progress, identify challenges, and offer appropriate interventions.
    • Offer mentorship and encouragement to students facing academic, personal, or social obstacles.
    • Collaborate with students to develop personalized academic plans and goals aligned with graduation requirements.
  • Academic Monitoring and Intervention:
    • Monitor student attendance, grades, and credit accumulation to identify students at risk of not graduating.
    • Implement intervention strategies to address academic deficiencies and support students in improving their performance.
    • Coordinate with teachers, counselors, and administrators to develop and implement academic support programs and initiatives.
  • Resource Coordination:
    • Connect students with resources and support services both within the school and in the community to address their academic, social, and emotional needs.
    • Provide information and assistance to students regarding credit recovery options, tutoring services, and alternative education programs.
    • Facilitate access to college and career readiness resources, including scholarship opportunities, college applications, and vocational training programs.
  • Parent and Guardian Engagement:
    • Foster positive relationships with parents and guardians to keep them informed about their child's academic progress and graduation status.
    • Conduct regular meetings and communication with parents to discuss student performance, goals, and support strategies.
    • Collaborate with parents and guardians to address any concerns or challenges impacting student success and graduation.
  • Data Tracking and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate records of student progress, interventions, and outcomes using designated tracking systems and databases.
    • Generate reports and data analysis to assess the effectiveness of graduation support programs and initiatives.
    • Utilize data to identify trends, areas for improvement, and opportunities to enhance graduation rates.

Homeless Population:

  • Working with the Flex/MO Option McKinney Vento population to secure a job.
  • Working with Joplin Schools McKinney Vento Coordinator/Liaison.
  • Tracking data on McKinney Vento graduation rates.
  • Helping McKinney Vento students meet graduation requirements and deadlines.  

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • Previous experience working with high school students in an educational or youth development setting.
  • Strong understanding of high school graduation requirements, academic standards, and student support services.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to establish rapport with students, parents, teachers, and community stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in data management and analysis.
  • Commitment to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in education.
  • Flexibility, patience, and resilience in working with diverse student populations and addressing complex challenges.
