Public defender asks for furlough for Memorial Middle School shooter

In documents filed Feb. 1 in Jasper County Circuit Court, public defender Brett Meeker asked Judge David Mouton to either reduce the bond for Memorial Middle School shooter Thomas Gregory White, 15, or allow White, who has been in jail for nearly 16 months to have a furlough.
A request for a hearing on the motions was filed today by public defender James Egan.
White was 13 and a seventh grader in October 2006 when he took an assault rifle into Memorial Middle School, fired the weapon into the ceiling, then allegedly tried to fire at Principal Steve Gilbreth, but the weapon jammed. White is being tried as an adult. The Missouri Supreme Court has scheduled a Feb. 28 hearing for the public defender's arguments to have the case remanded to juvenile court.
