Joplin R-8 Board opposes Amendment 3

The Joplin R-8 Board of Education voted 7-0 moments ago to oppose Amendment 3.

The board made its decision after receiving information from Superintendent C. J. Huff and Joplin NEA President Crystal Stokes.

School boards across the state have been passing resolutions opposing the amendment, which would strip teachers of their tenure rights and require that teacher evaluations be based on student scores on standardized tests.

I'm actually kind of surprised. I figured they'd want an avenue to be able to fire any one, any time...and blame it on test scores. For once I think that was a good vote. But I'm afraid they only did it because CJ did and NEA was with them.

I am pleased with this decision! That is all.

And by CJ...I mean Carl Junction...not Huff.

Joplin is known for jumping on bandwagons. This was hardly an original idea for them, but for once they thought they better keep up with the neighbors. It makes it look like they are pretending to care. And local control is something Cj must have in order to continue with his agenda.

One reason school boards are likely opposing this is due to the financial burden it would place upon them: two standardized tests per class per year. Nobody can afford to develop assessments for every class at every grade level. What would a PE assessment look like at the kindergarten level? Art in 2nd grade? That money would be better spent elsewhere, like actually supporting students instead of scrutinizing teachers based upon something they cannot control (student performance on an assessment).
