Billy Long: College admissions process should remain as objective as possible

Congressman Billy Long (MO-07) issued the following statement regarding the recent college admissions scam:

My heart aches for the students who over the years have done their very best by studying hard, training and piling on the extracurricular activities only to miss out on being admitted to the colleges they worked their entire lives to get into due to undeserving applicants taking the slots that were rightfully theirs.

This is a prime example of why I remove myself from the admissions process for the service academy applications.

Our applicants meet with a nomination board made up of service academy graduates. Once they pass muster with this board only then do I make a recommendation for admission to the various academies.

It’s important the college admissions process remains as objective as possible and no deserving student is at a disadvantage because of who they or their families know or don’t know.
