I teamed up with Senator Jon Tester (D-Mont.) this week to introduce the Commander John Scott Hannon Veterans Mental Health Care Improvement Act of 2019 to expand mental health efforts in local communities, to allow the VA to hire and train more professionals in this field and to develop innovative methods for the delivery of this care.
This legislation complements the president’s endeavor to end suicide among veterans through his recently-announced PREVENTS initiative and I am hopeful that a holistic approach – partnering with experts and scientists outside the federal government and among academia – will help end this national tragedy.
One veteran lost to suicide is too many and our nation’s heroes deserve the best our nation has to offer.
