Keenan Cortez appointed to Joplin City Council, effort to put Seibert back on Council falls one vote short

The Joplin City Council, after two tie votes between former Mayor Michael Seibert and Keenan Cortez, appointed Cortez, operations manager for Freeman Health System, to the Council by an 8-0 vote.

During the first two votes, Seibert's candidacy was backed by Mayor Gary Shaw and council members Ryan Stanley, Phil Stinnett and Doug Lawson.

Diane Reid Adams, Taylor Brown, Melodee Colbert-Kean and Anthony Monteleone backed Cortez.

Cortez replaces Jim West, who recently resigned, and will serve until April 2020.

Very happy to see that the four council members who initially voted for Cortez stuck with it. The 4-4 votes clearly demonstrated the effort by those wanting to create a power bloc and those wanting a new voice for positive change. Congrats to Cortez!

Have to say, if they would have placed a white man in this position the ACLU and NAACP would have been knocking at the doors of city hall

Seibert shouldn't even be considered! He was in on all kinds of financial shenanigans, including the illegal actions of Woolston.

And it doesn't matter what color/race or gender, just that we get someone who truly wants to serve the community and not a special group or anyone else with an agenda.

I don't know this gentleman, but I pray he will be an asset to the city council. We need new faces and new thoughts. Best wishes.
