Springfield News-Leader has no mention of Ruth Bader Ginsburg in today's print edition

The Springfield News-Leader has no mention of the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in its Saturday print edition.

This is not because of an appalling lack of news judgment.

Consider that Springfield area high school football fans will have to wait to read about the Friday night football games until their Sunday edition arrives.

That's because the News-Leader moved its printing from Springfield to Columbia after GateHouse Media bought Gannett (the company operates under the Gannett name) creating deadlines that make it impossible for the print edition to remain relevant.

It would not have mattered what day of the week Justice Ginsberg had died or any other major event took place in the early evening because these events no longer occur within the company's rigid printing schedule.

Of course, the Joplin Globe does not have anything about Justice Ginsburg's passing in its Saturday print edition- because the Joplin Globe does not have a Saturday print edition.

To be fair to the Globe, had this death occurred on any evening of the week except Friday or Sunday, it would have been placed prominently on page one of the print edition.

Both the Globe and News-Leader post e-paper facsimiles of their newspapers with the Globe's being exactly what its print edition would be if it had a Saturday print edition.

In those editions, the Globe, with more realistic deadlines for a daily newspaper, places the Ginsburg story in the upper left hand corner of page one.

The News-Leader has no mention.

On the home page of the Globe's website, links to reports on Ginsburg's death and the upcoming battle over the Supreme Court vacancy are easily accessible.

The home page of the News-Leader's website features dozens of links to articles, many of which are important and newsworthy.

I could find no mention of Ruth Bader Ginsburg's death. To find out about that, you have to click the "Nation/World" link at the top of the page.

Meanwhile, the article that is currently featured at the top of the News-Leader's website lets us know that the Better Business Bureau says fake "free trial" scams are preying on shoppers.

The spirit of GateHouse Media lives on.

They are not printing news, just information. Sad times we are living in!
