Arraignment set for Carthage man on first degree murder, assault, robbery charges

A Carthage man charged with first degree murder in connection with the August 1 shooting death of Don Pierce, 43, Carthage, will be arraigned in Jasper County Circuit Court Wednesday afternoon.

Lane Jordan Stephens, 29, is also charged with assault, four counts of armed criminal action and two counts of robbery.

Stephens was bound over for trial following an October 22 preliminary hearing.

Stephens allegedly shot and killed Pierce at the Quality Inn in Carthage and wounded his wife Toni Stephens, 25, who has since recovered.

After the shootings, Stephens purportedly held a knife to a woman at 1937 S. Garrison and stole her car.

He was taken into custody in Lamar the following day, but not before fighting with Lamar police officers and cutting Officer John Simpson with a knife, according to Carthage Police Department news release.
