A series of letters to the judge (mostly from family members) extolling Elliott Nelson's good qualities and accusing his underage victim of being a predator who was asking for it, Judge Douglas Harpool ignored their request for the minimum sentence of five years and sentenced Nelson to 20 years in a federal prison for sexual exploitation of children and 20 years for coercion or enticement of a female with the sentences to run concurrently.
Court documents indicate Nelson, whose failure to take responsibility for his actions contributed to the sentence, will be under supervised probation for 10 years after his sentence is completed and will have to register as a sex offender.
Nelson told investigators that he knew the girl, referred to as "Jane Doe" in the affidavit, was underage and that he met her through his former roommate in April when she and others were playing pool at his home.
Nelson acknowledged to investigators that he had sent the obscene photo to the girl.
