Greene County reports eight COVID-19 deaths, 51 this month

(From the Springfield-Greene County Health Department)

The Springfield-Greene County Health Department is heartbroken to announce the deaths of eight community members from COVID-19.

Our community lost:
A man in his 60s
A woman in her 70s
A man in his 70s
A man in his 70s
A man in his 70s
A man in his 70s
A man in his 70s
A man in his 80s

All of these individuals had underlying conditions. They were not associated with long-term care.

The Health Department extends our condolences to everyone impacted by these losses. We take each loss personally and our hearts are with you.

A total of 247 Greene County residents have died from COVID-19. Fifty-one deaths have been announced by the Health Department in the first eight days of December. So far, December’s totals have exceeded the total death counts for September (47 deaths) and November (42 deaths). October has been our deadliest month with 77 COVID-19 deaths.

Due to an increasing number of COVID-19 deaths, this will be the last daily death notice issued by the Health Department. We will instead report weekly death totals every Wednesday, beginning December 16, for the previous seven days. Reporting weekly numbers will provide our community a more comprehensive and consistent view of trends with those lost to COVID-19. We will be updating our dashboard to include more data on deaths, as well.

Number of total Greene County deaths by age group:

40s: 5 deaths

50s: 11 deaths

60s: 33 deaths

70s: 73 deaths

80s: 77 deaths

90s: 46 deaths

100s: 2 deaths

Sadly, this disease is impacting our entire community – not just older adults or those who live in long-term care. In October, the average age was 81. In November, it was 75, as we saw those in younger age groups—including in their 40s—pass away, demonstrating that we are all vulnerable.

Over the last three days combined (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday), we received 615 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Greene County citizens. Our current total is 16,512 confirmed cases.

As of this morning, there were 197 COVID-19 positive individuals hospitalized at either CoxHealth or Mercy Hospital Springfield. 88 of those individuals are Greene County residents.
