Joplin man during traffic stop admits to drinking four shots of Jim Beam, having meth in a $10 bill in his wallet

The Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney's office filed methamphetamine possession and driving while revoked charges against a Joplin man today.

According to the probable cause statement, Anthony Michael Owings (DOB 1972) told a Joplin police officer he had meth wrapped up in a $10 bill in his wallet.

He also admitted to having drank four shots of Jim Beam.

From the probable cause statement:

When I spoke with Owings he spoke quickly and had a heavy emphasis on certain letters like s and r. Owings struggled to find his insurance and searched in the same stack of papers multiple times. Owings had bloodshot eyes that were slow to react to light and a 1000-yard stare when he looked at me.

Owings also made spontaneous utterances that he had consumed four shots of Jim Beam in the past few hours prior to law enforcement contact. During Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, I saw four clues of impairment in Owings’ eyes. I also detected a moderate odor of intoxicants coming from Owings’s breath. Owings was arrested for DWI and DWS and provided a breath sample of BrAC 0.032.

Owings admitted he had used hydrocodone, Prozac, mood stabilizers, and PTSD medication, according to the probable cause statement.

Owings refused to provide a blood sample.

At this point, the Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney's office has not charged Owings, who has three DWI convictions, with DWI.
