Carthage man charged with assault, armed criminal action

Tyler James Perry (DOB 1992), Carthage, is being held without bond in the city jail after allegedly beating a man over the head with a gun and breaking his nose.

From the probable cause statement:

On 09/02/2025 officers with the Joplin Police Department contacted a male in reference to an assault that occurred in the area of East 9th Street and South Pennsylvania Avenue Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri.

Officers observed the male, Hunter Johnson, to have a large linear cut above his right eye, his left eye and nose were swollen and bruised, and the male's right eye also had bruising underneath it.

Johnson reported that on 09/01/2025 at approximately 8:00 PM, he was walking near 9th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue looking for his $700 bicycle that someone stole. Johnson reports that he walked past a male and female and the male displayed a black handgun and hit him on the head with it causing him to fall to the ground.

Johnson states the male, who he identified as Tyler Perry, started running away from him yelling "pussy." Johnson states that a female named Crystal (unknown last name) ran after Perry and told him he was the one who had assaulted Johnson and was running away. Johnson states that Perry pointed the firearm at Crystal and said something, but he couldn't remember what Perry had said.

Johnson described the handgun to possibly be a 9mm handgun. Johnson was shown a photo lineup at Freeman West Hospital. The photo lineup consisted of six individuals, one being the suspect Tyler Perry, and five other males with similar physical characteristics. Johnson picked Perry out of the photo lineup stating, he was positive about the identification.

Johnson had been transported to Freeman by ambulance. Injuries sustained include multiple nasal fractures which according to Johnson will require surgery, seven stitches to sew up the laceration on his face, and facial bruising.

Johnson advised at the hospital that he believed Perry was trying to kill him.

Tyler Perry is a convicted felon and is on Probation and Parole for Burglary 2nd Degree.

On 09/06/2025 Tyler Perry fled from Joplin Officers on foot from the area of 2nd Street and South Sergeant Avenue. Perry was located hiding in some bushes in the area and taken into custody. I had contacted Perry at the jail, and he told me that he couldn't stay off the meth, that he had heard the police were looking for him. Post Miranda Mr. Perry was advised of the allegations which he stated were not true. When asked about Hunter Johnson Mr. Perry requested an attorney.

The case was investigated by the Joplin Police Department.
